My Sound Bath Experience
You guys… I cannot even begin to explain how wonderful and magical a sound bath is. Many of you are probably wondering, well what is a sound bath? It is exactly what it sounds like! “A meditative experience where those in attendance are “bathed” in sound waves.”
In this blog post, I want to take you through my experience, share the purpose and benefits, and hopefully convince you guys to try it out!
My experience:
I decided to go with my sister, who came home from college, because we had both been wanting to go forever and we finally found a time. I have been missing her so much, so it was great to have a bonding experience.
The sound baths that are at my yoga studio are synchronized with certain moon phases. They usually fall on a new moon or a full moon. Thursday was a new moon which symbolizes a new start that is full of new opportunities. With this it is important to leave anything at the door that does not serve you. So, as we walked in the teacher cleansed us with incense which is used to clear any negativity in one’s body. I lied down on my mat and started to breathe out any negativity. Trying to get rid of any inner battles that had been hiding deep inside of me, any grudges I had been holding, etc. There were a few things that I was finally ready to let go of and now was the perfect time to realize that and let them go. Although we wish we could let go of things right as they happen, we are human, and sometimes things stay with us longer than we want because letting go can be hard.
The sound bath began with a loud banging noise, that scared me at first. I was thinking, “Oh no. Do I know what I just got myself into?” This is because this noise was not what I had expected. I decided that I just needed to relax and be present. Then I heard one last “bang!” and everything went quiet. It was this incredible feeling, like everything in the world became clear. This taught me that everything does not need to go exactly as I expected for it to be good.
After that, we went into a few rounds of Breath of Fire. To complete this breath, you breathe in normally and then rapidly exhale. The purpose is to reduce stress, feel calmer, and focus. I loved starting off the class like this because I felt like through my exhale, I could release anything and everything I wanted to.
Then, the teacher began to play the bowls (which if you have never heard before, you need to). The sound goes from one ear to the other and then to both and the sound waves continue to swirl around your head. The only things you have to focus on are the beautiful sounds and your breath. This allows you to figure out anything that has been going on in your life.
I thought it may be difficult to lie still for an hour, but it really wasn’t. I could just be. I wasn’t trying to do anything, I was just living and breathing and being still.
After more sounds and breathing, the instructor ended off with a few journal prompt ideas. Some people wrote on a piece of paper or in a journal, but I answered these prompts in my head.
When the class was over, my sister and I had no clue if we fell asleep or not, but all we new was that this spiritual experience was the best thing ever.
This sound bath was lead by the amazing Meg Metcalf at The Yoga Shack.
Purpose:
Sound baths help to release anxiety, deepen relaxation, and improve focus, sleep, and energy. This experience also provides one with a sense of rejuvenation. It can improve your mood and make you feel more connected with your goals, body, mind, and soul.
I know for me, all of these are true. I released negativity and stress and found peace within myself. I felt new and improved after it was finished and I had a smile on my face that wouldn’t go away.
Finally thoughts:
I had been needing a time to focus on my breath and meditate for a longer amount of time than usual and this was exactly that. This sound bath was an act of self-care that I definitely needed and I hope you all will consider it!
