Why I meditate

IMG_7850.jpeg

Just imagine yourself, eyes closed, sitting upright or laying down just simply breathing, letting everything go. All the stress from your day or the previous day...gone. Anything getting in your way from beginning a great day or having a nice end to your day... gone. This is the feeling of meditation.

All you must do is... breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. What's not to love?

Some people don’t think they have enough time, and some don’t understand why meditation is important.

For those who say you don’t have enough time, you are not alone. I used to say this all the time, every day, as my excuse. But we make time for the things we really want to do. Now, you may not be able to meditate every day for hours a day. But, can you take five minutes? Or ten? I promise it’s worth it and will make a huge difference.

If you wonder why you should mediate, here’s why!

  1. Reduces stress: We all get stressed at least sometimes. Even if you don’t get stressed, meditating is a good way to prepare yourself to handle unexpected obstacles without getting too overwhelmed and upset.

  2. Boosts emotional health: Studies show that meditation helps improve your outlook on life and on yourself.

  3. Helps you grow your best self: Meditation has strengthened many peoples’ self-awareness. Meditation allows you to find the best version of yourself, and makes you listen to what you need to do to make the best version grow and thrive.

  4. Reduces anxiety: I know that not everybody has anxiety, but a 2017 study showed that 284 million people experienced anxiety worldwide, which makes anxiety the most prevalent mental health disorder around the world.

  5. Expands attention span: Many people have a short attention span, but this doesn’t make getting work done or listening to others talk very easy. Meditation can help to lengthen your attention span and help you stay focused on a task for longer!

These are just a few of the many reasons to mediate. But here is the thing, we are all human and sometimes we forget. To make sure you don’t forget to meditate, you should come up with a mediation schedule. You could decide one time each day to meditate and just do it for five minutes.

There is no magic time of the day that is going to work for everyone, so you have to figure out when you want to meditate. There is no perfect time because you will always have a thousand things to do, but just take a few minutes and go mediate. It’s important to try to be as consistent as possible so you can get into a good routine!

My own experience: I take everything I do in life very very seriously. Now this can be a good thing, and a bad thing at the same time. Because of this, I get stressed very easily and very often. I have been trying all different things to help my stress. One of the things I use is meditation. I meditate for around 15 minutes every weekday, during the school year, and I notice so much of a difference. In class I am calmer, and the little things don’t bother me as much. When things don’t go as planned, I know I can just breathe through it.
